In HiFi stereo playback of records, the phono preamplifier – or phono pre – is a decisive variable for the amplification and linearization of the small pick-up voltages. Its properties deserve the greatest attention, since they determine the quality of the sound and the possible use of the entire monitoring chain.

The RESTEK EMAS is more than just an ordinary PhonoPre. It has seven unbalanced phono inputs and an additional unbalanced line level input. The RESTEK EMAS is the central control point for systems with several turntables or sound bases. All external sources are managed and forwarded through it. This is done by switching the signal sources, linearizing and amplifying or weakening the output signal and making special adjustments to the sound boxes to optimize the sound.

The RESTEK EMAS can be adapted to the pickup system in many areas. Both Moving Coil (MC) and Moving Magnet (MM) systems are supported.

Internally, the EMAS consists of two separate, partially symmetrical, identical mono preamps, each with two volume controls. It therefore has a total of eight potentiometers. The inputs are switched via high-quality signal relays, with the ground connections of the unswitched input sockets being separated from the device in order to avoid ground loops.

The input sensitivity of the selected phono input can be adjusted in a range from +32 dB to +67.5 dB. In this way, volume differences can be compensated for when switching between the individual inputs. Using the volume control, the signal can be attenuated by up to -95 dB or amplified by up to +10 dB. The two outputs, which can be controlled separately from each other, can be leveled against each other in a range of ± 6 dB and, if desired, can also be set synchronously with each other.
The output drivers of the phono preamp establish the connection to the power amplifiers or active loudspeaker boxes.

The low output resistance of 50 ohms and the maximum current of up to 200 mA of these driver stages enables correct line matching on the one hand and the use of sometimes unavoidably long connecting cables between the phono preamplifier and the power amplifiers on the other without the music signal being impaired by the cables.

All parts of the electronics of the RESTEK EMAS are DC-coupled. This makes it possible to transmit even the lowest frequencies. This means that even in the lower frequency spectrum, the transmission is distortion-free and phase-locked.

The noise of this phono preamplifier is extraordinarily low and the crosstalk is only detectable at the measurement limit.

The demand for ease of use and great functionality is realized through the possibility of controlling all special functions using the remote control or a single button. The design of the PhonoPre remains puristically clear – just like all devices in the RESTEK E series .
