RESTEK High End Made in Germany EPOS+ CD player.
“CD players all sound equally good” – that is what many experts assumed when CD technology was presented in 1977. After all, it was all about decoding digital data. And zeros and ones are always and forever zeros and ones. What should change there? Five years later, when the first CD players were actually available for purchase, many were still convinced that price differences between devices from different manufacturers could actually only be justified by a more or less complex design.
Every child today knows that one and the same CD played on different CD drives sounds completely different. Almost everything that makes up a CD player has an influence on the sound: the drive suspension, the housing feet, the reading head, and last but not least, of course, the digital-to-analog converter, which ultimately turns the zeros and ones into music again.
Ultimately, the listener is rightly always interested in the music, not the technical data: there are excellent CD players from different manufacturers whose developers adhere to completely different philosophies: some insist on upsampling, i.e. increasing the sampling rate from 44.1 kHz double or more. Others shun this technology like the devil shuns holy water because they fear increased jitter during upsampling.
At RESTEK, we don’t hold ourselves to beliefs, at least not when it comes to the best possible reproduction of music. We measure “what comes out later” and more importantly: we simply listen carefully and improve our products during development until we know: it doesn’t get any better! At least not with comparable effort. That’s why we are convinced that with the RESTEK EPOS+ we have developed the best CD player in its price range. And many listeners and specialist journalists agree with us in this assessment.
The construction of the EPOS goes back to the year 2000 – a small eternity for digital end devices. We have hardly changed the essential design features since 1987. And the RESTEK EPOS still looks modern – classic, timeless. And the EPOS still sounds fantastic, better than ever. Because technologically, we have always adapted our CD player to current technological developments over the years.
The drive of the RESTEK EPOS+ uses a pure audio drive. We are convinced that the commonly used computer or DVD drives in audio players are not the first choice. One of the recognized best pure audio drives is used in the EPOS+: a Philipps CDM-Pro-2-M. The quality standard continues with the well-known Burr&Brown OPA 627 op amp.
The shorter the cables in a music system, the better. Nevertheless: the RESTEK EPOS+ has an output impedance of relatively low 50 ohms. That’s why the cable between the CD player and the (pre-)amplifier can definitely be a little longer. The RESTEK puts it away, with its cinch or XLR sockets, depending on the listener’s choice.
With a top loader, the CD is inserted into the drive at the top, which is perfectly protected from dust and light under a flap. This means that you need a little space above the device to insert and remove the silver discs. There are no error-prone pushing or retracting mechanisms. As far as long-term quality is concerned, nothing can beat a top-loader
Like all devices in the RESTEK “ E class ”, the EPOS manages with an on/off switch and a multifunction rotary pushbutton. The usual functions such as forward and reverse, skip, repeat, random or normal playback can of course also be controlled via the optionally available remote control. With the converter, the listener can choose between 20-bit and 24-bit mode. The converter dithering can also be set in seven stages, and the phase can be adjusted.
Of course, we at RESTEK strive to keep your EPOS+ up to date with suitable upgrade offers in the future. That’s why at RESTEK even a seemingly short-lived good like a CD player is a device that you can inherit if you take good care of it. That’s why CD technology has a future with us.
